چکیده

We study the computational power and limitations of iterative combinatorial auctions. Most existing iterative combinatorial auctions are based on repeatedly suggesting prices for bundles of items, and querying the bidders for their “demand” under these prices. We prove several results regarding such auctions that use a polynomial number of demand queries: (1) that such auctions can simulate several other natural types of queries; (2) that they can approximate the optimal allocation as well as generally possible using polynomial communication or computation, while weaker types of queries can not do so; (3) that such auctions can solve linear programming relaxations of winner determination problems. We also initiate the study of how can the prices of bundles be represented when they are not linear, and show that the “default” representation has severe limitations.

More on the Power of Demand Queries in Combinatorial Auctions: Learning Atomic Languages and Handling Incentives

Query learning models from computational learning theory (CLT) can be adopted to perform elicitation in combinatorial auctions. Indeed, a recent elicitation framework demonstrated that the equivalence queries of CLT can be usefully simulated with price-based demand queries. In this paper, we validate the flexibility of this framework by defining a learning algorithm for atomic bidding languages...

Unit commitment by a fast and new analytical non-iterative method using IPPD table and “λ-logic” algorithm

Many different methods have been presented to solve unit commitment (UC) problem in literature with different advantages and disadvantages. The need for multiple runs, huge computational burden and time, and poor convergence are some of the disadvantages, where are especially considerable in large scale systems. In this paper, a new analytical and non-iterative method is presented to solve UC p...

Exponential communication inefficiency of demand queries

In the problem of …nding an e¢ cient allocation when agents’utilities are privately known, we examine the e¤ect of restricting attention to mechanisms using “demand queries,” which ask agents to report an optimal allocation given a price list. We construct a combinatorial allocation problem with m items and two agents whose valuations lie in a certain class, such that (i) e¢ ciency can be obtai...

Iterative Combinatorial Auctions: Achieving Economic and Computational Efficiency

ITERATIVE COMBINATORIAL AUCTIONS: ACHIEVING ECONOMIC AND COMPUTATIONAL EFFICIENCY David Christopher Parkes Supervisor: Lyle H. Classic game-theoretic solutions are often prohibitively expensive...
